Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha MTI (The NYK Group) and its Norwegian partner Dualog, has formed a partnership with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT Group) to conduct a proof-of-concept experiment for the next-generation on-board internet of things (IoT) platform.

The proposed experiment is expected to validate the technology that includes gathering data from a range of onboard sensors and monitoring equipment.

It also aims to validate remote distribution and management of on-board applications, as well as monitoring ship equipment, event analyses, and intelligent alerts.

The technologies to be tested under the new partnership are anticipated to benefit the maritime industry in real sea operations.

As part of the collaboration, NYK Group will employ the maritime IoT knowledge gained through its ship information management system (SIMS) and SIMS2 to promote a safe and efficient on-board IoT platform.

NTT DATA will provide edge computing technology to the IoT platform to enable the management of applications in on-board edge servers, high-speed data exchange among various machinery, and real-time distributed processing.

Under the new partnership, Dualog will employ its advanced technology and competence for the maritime digital data transportation platform that will ensure reliable and secure on-board internet, email, and cloud services from any satellite communications provider.

The results of the experiment are expected to be used by NYK Group. Class NK, DNV-GL, as well as ship machinery and equipment makers are also expected to receive benefits from the outcome of the collaboration.
