Meridian Port Services (MPS), a container terminal operator that handles seaborne freight traffic in Ghana, is set to make a new investment in innovative port technology with an aim to improve operations and efficiency across the ports in the country.
The investment includes an order to purchase 27 new gantry cranes for the expansion of Tema Port in Ghana, according to Ghana News Agency (GNA).

The port is being operated by MPS, which is a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Meridian Port Holdings, APM Terminals and Bolloré Transport & Logistics.
An equipment purchase agreement has been signed between MPS and China’s Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company (ZPMC) to acquire the cranes.
The agreement includes the construction, delivery and commissioning of seven ship-to-shore (STS) container-handling cranes and 20 electrical rubber-tyred-gantry (ERTG) cranes.
MPS noted that a sum of $82m will be required to buy the new equipment, which is expected to be delivered at the expanded Tema Port by December next year.

By GlobalDataMPS CEO Mohamed Samara said: “Shipping lines are already deploying the largest vessels that can dock along the West African routes; therefore, the MPS expanded infrastructure capacity, coupled with its renowned efficiency, will certainly create new opportunities for the shipping lines at the centre of the world.”
GPHA further noted that it has developed a master plan for the seaports in Ghana, while MPS will be responsible for handling the container terminal inside the new Tema Port expansion.
