Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has announced plans to equip two of its new vessels with an engine status monitoring system that has been developed by ClassNK Consulting Services.

MOL intends to harness ‘big data’ to improve the engines’ preventive plant maintenance and reduce overall lifecycle costs using the Class NK CMAXS system.

The new plan will see both MOL vessels equipped with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding’s main engine data analysis technology CMAXS e-GICSX on a CMAXS common platform system, which will have the ability to simultaneously operate and manage the main engine, power generator and auxiliaries.

The system will be combined with the CMAXS-LCA engine operation support service for the ships’ generator, which is to be provided by Daihatsu Diesel.

“MOL intends to harness ‘big data’ to improve the engines’ preventive plant maintenance and reduce overall lifecycle costs using the Class NK CMAXS system.”

Additional remote supervision sensors will also be installed within the generators in order to increase the accuracy of the CMAXS-LCA solution’s generator status monitoring and improve its automated diagnostic operations.

MOL’s newly revealed plan is a part of the company’s wider Ishin Next – MOL Smart Ship Project, which was first announced in November.

MOL is currently collecting and centralising big data systems on-board its vessels under the initiative, which aims to establish an integrated vessel-operation support network that will allow timely analysis of results both on-shore and at sea via onboard broadband systems.

The proposed network is expected to support MOL’s shipping operations, as well as reduce the company’s environmental impact, improve the efficiency of navigation and streamline vessel management, in addition to various other benefits.
