US company GE Power and Italian firm Fincantieri have agreed to collaborate on the development of a new emission control solution in order to reduce pollution in the marine industry.
The new solution will be known as the Shipboard Pollutant Removal System and will assist the regulation of emissions in accordance with the MARPOL’s emissions limits directive, which is scheduled to become effective by 2020.

The agreement follows a previous memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the two companies in September.
Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono said: “This strategy, having cutting-edge research and innovation at the forefront, will allow us to furthermore raise the bar of technology to the benefit of the cruise market, in a sector, as the one of minimization of environmental impact, which is so significant for our customers.”
The arrangement will see Fincantieri assume responsibility for defining the necessary technical requirements to design an emission control system for vessels, including the constraints and scope for improvements.
GE Power will devise the features essential for an emission control system to achieve the target performances.

The new solution will developed primarily for cruise vessels, but will also be capable of integration on all vessels that use heavy fuel.
The product is also claimed to reduce the operational costs for ship owners.
