Hamburg-based shipping group Reederei Hamburger Lloyd has selected Marlink's Sealink Plus VSAT package with unlimited L-band backup for its fleet of nine container ships and six bulkers, with the aim of moving away from the Telemar Germany solution.

Reederei Hamburger Lloyd was seeking a communications solution that can provide a quality link for downloading ECDIS updates, which is vital for the navigational safety of the fleet.

The company notes that moving from pay-as-you-go L-band communication services to the pay-monthly VSAT model will enable it to devise its budget more easily and offer more communication facilities for personnel.

Sealink Plus is expected to provide Hamburger Lloyd vessels uninterrupted global access to safety and efficiency by improving digital applications.

The technology upgrade is a result of close collaboration between Telemar Germany and Marlink where the combination of satellite communications services and technology, along with bridge electronics shared by the two companies, strengthens their position as a valuable technology and connectivity partner for modern ship owners.

"With a focus on cost combined with fixed service levels, Sealink Plus makes the decision to migrate from pay-as-you-go L-band services to VSAT even easier."

Telemar Germany managing director Achim Bomm said: “As Telemar we have a long, trustful partnership with Reederei Hamburger Lloyd.

Hamburger Lloyd has also decided to install XChange, which is an integrated communication management and application platform offering consistent network integration, while performing diverse management functions.

The new technologies such as XChange and 1m VSAT antennas will be provided as part of the monthly costings, while Hamburger Lloyd’s existing L-band system will be retained as a back-up solution.
