Sweden's University Of Gothenburg has selected Kongsberg Maritime's HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with the aim of assisting the expansion of the country's capabilities in the field of unmanned platform-based marine research.

The HUGIN will be funded via grants from the Swedish Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and is to be managed by a project team from the University of Gothenburg and two other Swedish universities, Chalmers University of Technology and Stockholm University.

It will be considered a national asset for marine research projects around Sweden and abroad once completed.

University of Gothenburg Oceanography professor Anna Wåhlin said: “In order to map the ocean environment to the degree that vital climate change research requires, we need to focus more on increasing our use of autonomous observation platforms.

“Our new HUGIN AUV will significantly expand our ability to map ice, seabed, and explore marine environments previously inaccessible to us.

“Kongsberg won the contract based on flexibility, experience, future expansion possibilities and price.

"Our new HUGIN AUV will significantly expand our ability to map ice, seabed, and explore marine environments previously inaccessible to us."

"We are confident that HUGIN will become an important tool in our on-going research in waters closer to Sweden, for example, in the Skagerrak and the Baltic Sea in addition to projects in the Antarctic and Arctic.”

The AUV will be configured with a rate of 3,000m, with a range of up to 300km.

The vehicle is set to be delivered in February next year and will also feature an advanced Kongsberg navigation system, as well as a package of Kongsberg and third party instruments and sensors, including an EM 2040 Multibeam echo sounder and environmental sensors such as the Contros HydroC CO2.

In addition, Kongsberg will provide a HUGIN Operator Station (HOS) Payload Operator Station (POS) and Acoustic Positioning Operator Station (APOS) for communication and full control of the vehicle and payload from the mothership.
