Innovative methods for the improvement of energy efficiency on board ships will also be examined throughout the study.

This will involve the use of energy-saving devices, such as propeller modifications, as well as the application of more energy-efficient electrical devices.

The partnership will jointly assess the performance of an Aquarius Marine Solar Power system, which will be provided by EMP.

This system is being deployed on board a ship in the company’s fleet.

Multiple maritime technology providers, including Furukawa Battery and KEI System, will also participate in the study.

Initially concentrating on a geared Handymax vessel, the study will integrate design elements of the Aquarius Eco Handymax design concept.

Furthermore, the fleet-wide solutions will be assessed in areas that are expected to enhance vessel energy efficiency, boost safety and reduce operational costs.

Eco Marine Power president Greg Atkinson said: “This study project, along with the installation of equipment, is a great opportunity for Eco Marine Power and our partners to demonstrate the technologies and solutions we have been developing for a number of years, including Aquarius Marine Renewable Energy, which was granted Approval in Principle by ClassNK in 2021.”
