Deltamarin has secured a deal from Iceland's Eimskip and Greenland-based Royal Arctic Line for the construction of three container vessels, based on the company's own design.

The ships' construction will be carried out at the Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China, which has signed an executive design contract with Deltamarin's Chinese branch.

Deltamarin sales and marketing director Markku Miinala said: “We are very proud of this new contract, which further confirms our expertise in cargo ships.

“The design is based on Deltamarin’s extensive development work for a new generation of energy-efficient and operationally optimised 1,000TEU-3,000TEU container vessels intended for feeder service.”

Deltamarin previously developed the vessel concept for two ship companies based on their intended trading routes.

The vessels are designed to fulfill key performance indicators such as container carriage variety, homogenous loading capacity, optimal manoeuvrability and harsh weather seakeeping performance.

The new 2,150TEU ice-class container vessels are capable of sailing in Arctic waters and will also fulfil the newly adopted IMO Polar Code.

Deltamarin's container ship design comprises an overall length of 180m and a breadth of 31m, making it one of the largest container vessels currently in operation.

"The design is based on Deltamarin’s extensive development work for a new generation of energy-efficient and operationally optimised 1,000TEU-3,000TEU container vessels."

The company noted it has designed the vessels to ensure they create minimal impact on the environment.

The ships will comply with the IMO NOx TIER III requirements and will have a built-in scrubber system to minimise sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions.

Deltamarin also claimed that the vessels will consume less fuel per container unit, which will significantly reduce operating costs.

Construction of the ships will take place at Deltamarin’s Shanghai office over an estimated period of eight months.
