Vessel Insight from Kongsberg will mainly be used to deliver instant and easy access to fleet overviews, as well as vessel-specific dashboards and analysis tools.

Vessel-to-cloud data infrastructure helps to acquire and integrate quality data in a cost-efficient and secure manner, said the company.

As part of the Ecoshipping programme, Vale will use the data collected by Vessel Insight Connect to check and confirm fuel and emissions savings.

Developed by Vale, the Ecoshipping programme aims to help advance the implementation of new technologies to help lower carbon emissions from shipping.

Two Guaibamax vessels that have already deployed the Vessel Insight platform feature wind-assist rotor sails and air lubrication technology, which uses a layer of air bubbles under the hull to improve hydrodynamic efficiency.

Fuel efficiency technology is currently being evaluated by the four Valemax vessels.

Kongsberg digital ocean growth vice-president Christopher Bergsager said: “Vale’s investment in sustainable shipping technology, including efficient Valemax and Guaibamax bulk carriers, positions them as a leader in driving sustainable solutions in the industry.

“We are thrilled to partner with Vale and provide them with our vessel-to-cloud infrastructure to help monitor fuel and emissions savings and support their efforts towards reducing their carbon footprint.”

Last month, Kongsberg Maritime secured an order from Grimaldi Group, an Italian shipping company, to deliver engineering and technology for two new roll-on-roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels.
