Korean Register (KR) has opened a new information communications technology (ICT) centre in order to speed up the development of innovative information and ICT systems across the maritime and ship classification industries.
KR's centre is expected to enable the Korean shipbuilding and marine transport industries to meet new and challenging demands.

The ICT has been designed to help the maritime sector to adopt advanced onshore technologies, and the facility will initially focus on developing new technologies for maritime big data, e-Navigation, ship cyber security and software quality assurance.
The centre has already started developing new software test standards in line with ISO 25000 to verify the quality of IT software, and it is expected that it will be able to offer comprehensive software test services to its client in near future.

The Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ SMART-Navigation project was launched last year. It seeks to improve safety around the country’s coastline and create a new market for efficient shipping.
The $114m project was developed in accordance with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) e-Navigation strategy, and is scheduled to end by 2020.
KR has also built a system to manage ship construction data using cloud computing.
The system compiles with IMO’s new common structural rules (CSR).
