Swiss-based environmental group World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has announced a partnership with European technology company Atos to accelerate decarbonisation across the maritime shipping sector.

The three-year partnership will focus on analysing a new industry every year which has a significant carbon footprint. This year’s focus will be on the maritime sector as it remains responsible for 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Atos and WWF have produced an integrated report, which follows the IMO GHG strategy and will be presented during the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28).

According to Atos, this report will provide insights on GHG reduction to meet the 1.5°C industry target while presenting research focused on new fuels and ship design.

Tech Foundations CEO and Atos deputy CEO Nourdine Bihmane emphasised Atos’ expertise in decarbonisation.

During the joint WWF and Atos press briefing, it was noted that energy efficiency and operation optimisation across the shipping industry were the crucial lever for boosting decarbonisation.

Atos sustainability and decarbonisation leader Angel Ramirez further stated how transport demand, the modal shift and capacity utilisation were key elements in long-term targets for the shipping sector.

The briefing additionally stated that the shipping industry’s shortcomings consisted of diverse and insufficient commitments, little research, and unchallenging digital technologies.

The companies put emphasis on using technology to increase decarbonisation and aim to utilise Atos’ expertise and current solutions.
