What is Environmental?

The Environmental category aims to highlight companies that are undertaking projects that reduce their impact on the natural environment or contribute to its general health. With the effects of climate change becoming ever more obvious, corporations have a responsibility to update and change their practices to prevent further damage being caused.

This category includes any projects that have led or will lead to a significant reduction in a company’s environmental impact and carbon footprint. This can include changes to materials and manufacturing, supply chain reviews; reduction in energy use or switches to renewables; recycling initiatives; and carbon offsetting. The category also includes projects that contribute to the environment such as tree planting schemes and river cleaning.

Themes

The industry has been known to be one of the biggest contributors to global carbon emission production. During the research period the companies ranked below have been working hard to shift focus towards renewable fuels, carbon and methane emissions measuring and reduction as well as carbon-capture operations and rigs and field installations decommissioning.

There has also been an increase in green solutions providing an increased industry effort towards carbon-reduction initiatives, developing projects to develop clean energy and creating research centres for alternative and bio-fuels.

Shipping supplies and uses a large quantity of alternative fuels and the companies in this category have been securing supply deals, expanding supply chains and fuel holding capacity as well as creating green infrastructure to make a sustainable value-chain.

The companies in this category have been working to develop technologies to combat carbon emissions such as carbon capture and measurement technologies as well as creating certification programmes for them.

The companies in this category have been developing innovative solutions to combat carbon emissions such as ships operating on alternative fuels, fossil-free shipping, carbon-negative technology certification and methane emissions monitoring and assessment.
