SMM Hamburg, the biggest maritime fair of 2018, ended recently and Datum Electronics, together with our German sales agency Matau-Marine, joined thousands of maritime professionals and industry visitors in making the event hugely successful.

The Datum stand was located within the British Pavilion and was part of the Green Route, alongside other providers of environmentally friendly solutions, all with the intent of reducing emissions and improving efficiency in marine industry.

Datum Electronics’ Marine Shaft Power Meter occupies a unique space on the marketplace, due to its lightweight flexible rotor, which can be supplied from stock and adjusted on site. Using proven, highly reliable and accurate strain gauge technology, married to cutting-edge technology Diesel Hawk© and electronics, the system is also completely maintenance free. As it doesn’t require re-calibration, servicing, or regular engineering visits, it not only saves costs, but also guarantees accelerated return on investment. Once installed and commissioned, which can be achieved in only 1-2 days, the marine shaft power meter helps ship owners and operators to calculate and improve a vessel’s $ per kW ratio, by measuring torque, power, rpm, thrust and bending (two latter options are optional depending on customer configuration).

Throughout the show’s four-day duration, the team met with existing clients, agencies and distributors to discuss new innovations and existing projects, as well as consolidating our new partnerships, which will be announced later this year. We also spoke to many more new customers, who are looking to improve the efficiency of their maritime fleet, by demonstrating the shaft power meter.

The hot topic on many of our visitor’s lips, was Datum’s new patent-pending technology, developed as an innovation named Diesel Hawk©. This system will be manufactured and supplied as an enhancement to our standard shaft power meter system and is capable of providing live condition monitoring in real time, of each cylinder of the engine. Having extremely high resolution and sampling rates, Diesel Hawk represents the ultimate sensor system for real-time condition-based ship monitoring, allowing sharply-focused preventative maintenance, thereby providing savings of both time and money. The system is also a ‘smart’, intelligent system, carrying out the analysis for you and minimising data overheads. All the information you require comes from only one sensor, no need for additional sensors all over your engines.

Mark Gladdis, marine product manager, commented: “During 2018 we have witnessed a huge surge in interest regarding the Datum Marine Shaft Power Meter, from the Danish Maritime Fair and Posidonia to SMM. With rising fuel prices, bigger ships being built and the IMO’s commitment to make shipping more sustainable, we strongly believe that even more ship owners and fleet managers will be looking at improving vessel efficiency, by adding a torque shaft power meter to their must-have list.”

We want to thank everyone who helped to make SMM a huge success for us and hope we were able to answer all questions. For any further queries, please fill out the enquiry form on this page.
