Associated British Ports (ABP) has taken delivery of two new ship-to-shore gantry cranes at its Hull Container Terminal located at Queen Elizabeth Dock.

The cranes are worth a combined £10.5m and are expected to double the terminal’s current cargo handling capacity, allowing the site to handle more than 400,000 units per year.

The 600t, 50m-high cranes were built by Liebherr in Ireland and are expected to be fully operational by April.

Both cranes were purchased as part of a £15m investment that was originally announced by ABP in May 2016.

The investment also covers the purchase of various pieces of equipment such as reach stackers and tug trailers, as well as the creation of 9,000m² of new storage space for customers.

In addition, ABP intends to invest a total of £50m in its container terminals located on the Humber estuary in Immingham and Hull in order to address the continued growth in demand.

The Hull Container Terminal spreads across ten acres of land and is noted to be the third-largest short-sea container port on the east coast of the UK.

ABP operates four ports on Humber, including sites in Grimsby, Goole, Immingham and Hull, which altogether handle around 13% of the UK’s current seaborne trade.

The ports are estimated to handle a combined £75bn worth of trade every year.
