The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has awarded a grant of $3m to the Port of Hueneme to support the port’s ship-to-shore zero-emission energy project.
The funding is part of a joint application submitted by the port and the Port of Los Angeles for California’s Zero and Near-Zero Emission Freight Facilities (ZANZEFF) grant.

ZANZEFF is funded through the California’s Cap and Trade dollars initiative that will see the state invest billions of dollars to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as improve the economy, public health and environment.
Port of Hueneme, which is owned and operated by Oxnard Harbor District, will also provide $200,000 to complement the CARB grant for a total project cost of $3.2m.
Oxnard Harbor District president Mary Anne Rooney said: “This type of funding allows our ports to continue to lead the world in reducing emissions and implementing green initiatives.”
The Port of Hueneme will use the CARB fund to help its customers to transport their cargo from the ship to the shore through a completely zero-emission way.

By GlobalDataPort of Hueneme CEO and director Kristin Decas said: “The projects funded by this grant will lay the foundation for the next phase of green infrastructure and equipment at the Port, which will support electric cranes, electric cargo-handling equipment, and a hydrogen-fuel-cell truck dedicated to moving our customer’s fresh produce to the marketplace.
“You will be seeing zero-emission avocados, bananas, and pineapples coming out of the port soon.”
The port will also develop infrastructure to support the charging of electric cargo-handling equipment on-dock.
