Japanese ship classification society ClassNK has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) in connection with cybersecurity.
This initiative has been taken to provide support to Panama for enhancing the security of its ships.

Last week, PMA launched the Cyber Incident Voluntary Reporting Scheme to enhance its understanding of cyber threats that can impact ships.
The scheme is also aimed at helping develop practical measures for managing cyber risks.
Through this scheme, PMA has encouraged all Panama-flagged ships to report detected cyber occurrences.
According to the agreement, ClassNK will support PMA to ensure cybersecurity by offering its experience.

By GlobalDataUnder the MoU, ClassNK will also evaluate the collected information from the PMA’s cyber incident voluntary reporting scheme.
PMA merchant marine general director Rafael Cigarruista said: “It is our duty to take action against cyber risk and contribute to the safety of maritime transport.
“On this occasion, we are very happy to conclude an MoU with ClassNK, a leading classification society putting effort into maritime cyber security. By integrating the knowledge and expertise from both flag state and classification society, we are confident in developing measures against cyber risks that are appropriate for the industry to deploy.”
ClassNK executive vice-president and innovation development division director Hirofumi Takano said: “ClassNK has strived to develop rules and standards and conduct certification services based on outcomes gained through collaboration with front runners. We will continue to promote initiatives based on diverse partnerships and work to propose best practices related to ensuring cyber security suitable for shipping.”
Earlier this year, ClassNK granted its first DSS (Hull Monitoring) certification to bulk carrier Dream Clover.
