China’s Nanjing Jinling shipyard has begun construction of Finnlines’ second new hybrid roll-on / roll-off (RoRo) vessel.

The construction started on 16 September with a traditional steel-cutting ceremony.

The hybrid RoRo vessel is part of Finnlines’ $592m newbuilding programme.

The programme includes three green hybrid RoRo vessels and two eco-friendly Superstar roll-on / roll-off passenger (RoPax) ships.

Besides lithium-ion battery banks that enable ‘zero emissions in port’, the vessels will feature many advanced technologies that can cut down emissions and energy use.

These advanced technologies include air lubrication system to reduce hull resistance.

The RoRo vessels are scheduled to be delivered during 2021–2022, while the Superstar RoPax vessels are expected to begin operations in 2023.

The building of the Finnlines’ first RoRo vessel from the series commenced in June.

In honour of green innovations, the new hybrid RoRo vessels will be called Finneco I, Finneco II and Finneco III.

Finnlines CEO Emanuele Grimaldi said: “Over the past ten years, we have steered investments to energy efficiency and green technologies and our newbuilding programme focuses on further energy-saving features.

“These new ultra-green vessels will offer our customers very sustainable liner services in the future.”

Once in operation in the Baltic Sea, these vessels will have the highest Finnish / Swedish ice class.

Following completion, the RoRo vessels will have a length of 238m and a breadth of 34m and come with a cargo capacity of 5,800 lane metres and 5,600m² of car decks in addition to approximately 300 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) on weather deck.

Finnlines is a shipping operator of RoRo and passenger services in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. It is a part of the Grimaldi Group, an operator of RoRo vessels.
