Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) has begun operating eight hybrid straddle carriers received from Konecranes as part of its commitment to reaching climate neutral operations by 2025.

The Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers have been installed at the port’s existing terminal in Copenhagen, Denmark and will reduce emissions and improve efficiency thanks to their ability to lift containers 1-over-3.

Povl Dolleris Røjkjær Ungar, COO of CMP, said: “These machines run on fossil-free HVO100* biodiesel instead of fossil diesel and utilize modern hybrid electric technology, consuming significantly less fuel than previous equipment.

“With these new machines, efficiency and productivity will improve, meeting our customers’ demands.”

The new vehicles were ordered in early 2023 and began assembly at the site at the end of the year but have been subject to on-site testing before being handed over to the port operator.

While they have been installed at the existing terminal in Copenhagen, the straddle carriers will eventually be moved to a new terminal being developed for CMP by By & Havn in Ydre Nordhavn, which will replace the existing site in 2025.

In addition to the new carriers, Konecranes is also set to deliver two electric Ship-to-Shore cranes to CMP for the new terminal at the beginning of next year.

CMP has been investing significantly in hybrid and electric technology in recent years as it lowers its emissions, with the opening of the new port set to coincide with the operator reaching its climate neutral targets.

Thanks to its maritime history and strong industry presence, Copenhagen has become a centre of activity for sustainability efforts as Ship Technology found out during a visit to the city earlier this year.
