Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (PAS) has opened a container terminal to expand its cargo handling capacity.
Construction of the terminal began in 2015, while the opening marks the completion of an expansion carried out at PAS.

The terminal was built with a $74m investment from Japanese Cooperation Agency (JICA) and has increased the port’s cargo handling capacity from 10,000t to 50,000t.
With a depth of 13.5m, the terminal is designed to offer 330m of additional ship docking space at the port, reported phnompenhpost.com.
Capable of accommodating larger vessels visiting the port, the terminal will facilitate 70% of imports and exports moving through the country.
Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen was quoted by khmertimeskh.com as saying: “A capacity of 50,000t is not bad, but we are not fully satisfied yet and will continue to work towards reaching 14.5m in depth, which will allow us to harbour ships carrying up to 60,000t.”
Sen further noted the Japanese investment in the newly opened terminal is part of a $203m loan approved by the Government of Japan during his visit to Japan in August last year.
Cambodia Public Works and Transportation Minister Sun Chanthol said: “The port is now better equipped to play an increasing role in the transportation of goods and will increase the country’s competitiveness in the region by reducing logistics costs.”
PAS is currently linked to Cambodia’s national roads 2, 3 and 4.
It is also connected with the country’s railroad system and is expected to be linked to a new highway connecting the Cambodia capital to Sihanoukville.
