Marine technology firm Wartsila has signed a contract with cruise operator Hurtigruten to supply a number of solutions for more sustainable shipping.

As part of the contract, Hurtigruten is converting three vessels into hybrid-powered expedition cruise ships.

Wartsila will supply the equipment by December.

MS Finnmarken is the first of the three ships to undergo modernisations. The 140m-long 530-passenger ship will be renamed MS Otto Sverdrup after the conversion.

According to the contract, the ship’s Wartsila selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology engines will be upgraded to cut emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx).

The cruise ship will be fitted with four Wartsila nitrogen oxide reducer (NOR) systems and two Energopac-integrated propeller and rudder systems.

“The fact that we could deliver Tier III certificates for the total installation was a significant factor in the award of this contract.

Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam said: “At Hurtigruten, the push for sustainable solutions and introduction of green technology is the core of everything we do. We operate in some of the most spectacular areas of the world. This comes with a responsibility.”

Recently, the Finnish firm won a contract to deliver LNG fuel storage and supply system for two new trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs).
