ClassNK certifies Samsung’s SAS-IBS autonomous navigation component

ClassNK’s "Guidelines for Technology Qualification" will provide a framework to assess the safety of new technologies not addressed by existing regulations.

Japanese ship classification society ClassNK has granted a Technology Qualification (TQ) for the “SAS-IBS”, a component of the Samsung Autonomous Navigation Assistance System (SAS) developed by Samsung Heavy Industries.

The certificate was officially handed over during a ceremony at KORMARINE 2025.

The development of technologies for maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) is underway as part of efforts to address crew shortages, ease workloads, and minimise human error in the marine sector.

In response, ClassNK has established its "Guidelines for Technology Qualification" to provide a framework for evaluating the safety of new technologies that existing regulations do not cover.

Using these guidelines, ClassNK conducted a review of the “SAS-IBS”, which involved novelty assessment, risk analysis, simulation trials, and validation of its qualifications.

After confirming that the main functions necessary for autonomous navigation conformed to the set requirements, ClassNK issued its statement regarding the technology.

ClassNK stated that it will continue to support the implementation of automated and autonomous operation technologies by establishing standards and conducting technical verification.

In September this year, ClassNK granted approval in principle (AiP) to an ammonia-fuelled LPG/ammonia carrier jointly developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and MITSUI E&S, confirming the design meets safety and regulatory standards.

In July, ClassNK launched a new service called ClassNK Fleet Cost Simulation, designed to support the maritime industry’s shift towards decarbonised fuels.

This service offers clients cost estimations associated with complying with greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction regulations, such as the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) mid-term measures, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), and FuelEU Maritime.
