PowerCell’s Marine System 225 receives Type Approval from Lloyd’s Register

This approval affirms the system’s compliance with stringent maritime safety and performance standards.

PowerCell, a Sweden-based hydrogen electric solutions provider, has announced that its hydrogen fuel cell solution, Marine System 225, has received Lloyd's Register's Type Approval.

This approval confirms the Marine System 225 system’s compliance with stringent maritime safety and performance standards and marks a pivotal step in the maritime industry's move towards clean energy solutions.

The Marine System 225, a key component of PowerCell's fuel cell-based power solutions, is engineered for the harsh marine environment.

Offering 225kW of clean, vibration-free power, its modular design facilitates easy integration into new builds or retrofits.

The system allows shipowners and operators to meet or surpass the IMO decarbonisation targets, adhere to the EU Fit for 55 initiative, and secure a competitive advantage as regulations become more stringent.

PowerCell Group Engineering senior vice president Lisa Kylhammar said: “This Type Approval is not just a technical validation; it's a strong signal to the maritime industry that hydrogen fuel cell systems are viable, safe, and ready for deployment at sea.

“We are proud to support the maritime sector in its transition towards zero-emission propulsion. Type approval is a key enabler to support and simplify the design, construction and deployment of marine vessels.”

With the Type Approval from Lloyd's Register, the Marine System 225 opens opportunities for commercial projects and pilot programmes across various vessel types, including ferries and offshore support ships.

PowerCell will showcase this system at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo in Amsterdam from 24-26 June 2025.

Lloyd's Register has also recently approved the use of ammonia dual-fuel systems on new medium gas carriers for the Singaporean commodity trading company, Trafigura.

This follows a successful joint development project focused on designing ammonia dual-fuel systems.

The approved vessels, featuring WinGD engines and Alfa Laval's Ammonia Release Mitigation System, will transport both liquefied petroleum gas and ammonia.
