French shipping company CMA CGM has selected Wärtsilä's ballast water management system (BWMS) for its four new 3,300 twenty-foot equivalent unit (teu) container vessels.
The newly-placed order marks the third Wärtsilä BWMS from CMA CGM, taking the shipbuilder’s total number of vessels to be equipped with the system to ten.

Wärtsilä's Aquarius UV system has a 500m³ per hour capacity and uses a two-stage process, involving both filtration and ultra-violet (UV) irradiation.
Delivery of the system is scheduled to begin by July this year.
The CMA CGM vessels to be equipped with Aquarius UV technology are currently under construction at Cosco Zhoushan shipyard, China.

The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM) was adopted in 2004 to introduce global regulations for controlling the transfer of potentially invasive aquatic species, which may be unintentionally taken on board by vessels during navigation.
BWM is set to take effect on 8 September, and will require all ships operating internationally to treat their ballast water before being released into a new location.
