MAN Diesel & Turbo has been contracted to provide the main engines for a new, icebreaking, supply-and-research vessel, to be operated by Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).
Designed to serve missions in demanding environments and provide extended mission times, each of the two 16V32/44CR engines to be supplied for AAD can generate 9,600kW of power.

Additionally, MAN Diesel & Turbo will provide an integrated SCR system to ensure the environmentally friendly footprint of the new vessel.
The icebreaking vessel, which is being procured by Serco Defence through DMS Maritime, will be designed and built by Damen Shipyards Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS).
Expected to participate in various AAD missions for the next 30 years, the vessel is expected to be delivered by April 2020.
Featuring research, rescue and resupply capabilities, the vessel will be equipped with a moon pool, drop-keel, multi-beam bathymetric and scientific echo sounders, fisheries sonar systems, hydrophones, and underwater cameras.

AAD, which is a division of the Australian Government’s Department of the Environment and Energy, is currently involved in improving the country’s strategic, scientific, environmental, and economic interests in the Antarctic region.
