Philippines-based ports and terminals operator International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) has unveiled the first phase of a new greenfield terminal at its Basra Gateway Terminal, situated in North Port, Umm Qasr, Iraq.
Marking the first port infrastructure development carried out with full foreign investment in the country, the new expansion is capable of berthing vessels of up to 300m and 12m draft.

Developed with an investment of $130m, the expanded terminal has two ship-to-shore quay cranes, which can handle larger container vessels than before in Umm Qasr.
The terminal also includes three rubber tired gantries, a new scanner solution, a weighbridge, as well as a BGT training centre with a simulator to train staff and other equipment.
It uses Navis N4 terminal operating system to operate.
International Container Terminal Services chairman and president Enrique Razon Jr said: “ICTSI’s commitment to Iraq is evidenced in major investments in the upgrade of existing berths 19, 20 and the construction of the new terminal incorporating Berth 27.

Once fully developed, the new terminal area will include 600m of quay and 50ha of yard area.
ICTSI, which is involved in developing, managing and operating gateway terminals, currently operates 30 terminals in 20 countries.
