Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding has installed a sulphur dioxide (SOx) scrubber onto an 84,000M.T.D/W bulk carrier, christened as M/V Nadeshiko.
The installation of the SOx Scrubber, manufactured by Fuji Electric, is the result of a joint research support project with ship classification society, Class NK and includes the main engine exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS) installation on operating newbuilding vessel, and closed loop practicing test.

The electric SOx scrubber uses a cyclone system and features a compact size which allows it to be integrated into a vessel without having to modify the dimensions of superstructure.
Main engine EGCS decreases the emission of SOx in exhaust gas even if high sulfur content fuel is used.
The installation of the SOx scrubber is subject to approvals from the concerned authorities and its compliance to International Maritime Organisation (IMO) EGCS guideline.
After acquiring the necessary approvals, the vessel will conduct data collection and assess the system, maintenance and operation.
