Port of Oakland

The Port of Oakland’s outer harbour Ben E. Nutter terminal has re-opened after undergoing a major refurbishment, in a bid to improve cargo handling capabilities.

Everport Terminal Services currently manages the operations of the terminal after it acquired the responsibility from Evergreen Marine Corporation’s container terminals.

The Nutter terminal was closed in November to complete the renovations and its vessel operation will be marked by the terminal welcoming a 1,100ft container vessel Ever Liberal, owned by Taiwanese carrier Evergreen Line.

The upgrades to the terminal include rebuilding entrance gates for harbour truckers, adding more than 100 new pieces of cargo-handling equipment to the existing capacity and introducing a new terminal operating system.

"We’re pleased that the management of Ben E. Nutter Terminal shares our desire to upgrade operations in Oakland."

The recent series of improvements are deemed necessary as the West Coast terminal operators handle some of the largest container ships in the global shipping fleet.

Port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll said: "Across the Port we’re taking steps to improve performance and efficiency.
