Global travel and leisure company Carnival Corporation has awarded a contract to power and automation technology group ABB for the delivery of electrical power plants and propulsion systems for cruise operator’s two new vessels.

Under the terms of the $60m deal, ABB will deliver electric Azipod propulsion systems which have the electric drive motor in a submerged pod outside the ship’s hull.

Additionally, ABB will provide generators, main switchboards, a remote control system and distribution transformers for the new vessels.

Azipod propulsion systems are expected to enhance safety, fuel efficiency while also reducing the negative environmental impact.

The ships, which are under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, will sail under Carnival’s brands, Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line.

One of the vessel will be sister ship to Koningsdam, meanwhile the other newbuilds will be sister ship to Carnival Vista, both of which are currently under construction at Fincantieri shipyards.

With a gross tonnage of 99,500t and 133,500t respectively, The new vessels will have the capacity to accommodate 2,650 and 3,954 passengers respectively, and are scheduled for delivery in 2018.

Currently, 24 ships within the Carnival’s fleet are equipped with Azipod propulsion.
