Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASV) received more than £3m in funding from Innovate UK to undertake research and development for Maritime Autonomous Systems (MAS).

Along with nine other commercial and research organisations, ASV will be involved in three projects that aims to address different areas covering the wide spectrum of activities concerning MAS.

It includes software and communications, autonomous vehicle interaction, operations and regulations, as well as launch and recovery.

As part of this programme, ASV will be working with D-RisQ, Cranfield University and Frazer Nash Consultancy to develop and prove its capability on unmanned surface vehicles (USVs).

This project will focus on software development, in addition to collision avoidance and regulatory considerations.

In order to develop a low-cost, integrated, shore-based method of surveying the full water column, ASV will be using the C-Enduro alongside the National Oceanography Centre’s Autosub Long Range.

This autonomous surface/sub-surface survey system project also included Sonardyne and SeeByte, which will offer long-term and low-cost surveying and monitoring operations for the offshore energy and mining industry, ASV stated.

ASV will also collaborate with Planet Ocean, NOC and the University of Southampton for the development of a system for launching and recovering an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from a USV.
