Hamburg’s HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) has started operating its twelve low-emission straddle carriers.

Claimed to be the world’s lowest-emission straddle carriers, these modern diesel-electric vehicles will help HHLA to reduce emissions at container terminals.

The straddle carriers produce emissions of nitrogen oxides of up to 94% lower than the previous model and generate 95% less particulate matter.

HHLA executive board member responsible for the container segment Dr Stefan Behn said: "By adding the twelve new straddle carriers, we have further expanded the fleet of vehicles at the Container Terminal Burchardkai.

These vehicles are designed to comply with the requirements of the European Union’s emissions standard Euro 4.

Compared with its predecessors, the new straddle carriers offer an annual carbon dioxide saving of more than 130,000 kilos per vehicle.

CTB currently operates a total of 133 straddle carriers.
