Japan-based ship classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) will work with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding and MES Technoservice to support research in the development of a monitoring system for the Mitsui MAN B&W engine.

The developed system will help in the early detection of irregularities in the electronically controlled engines.

The operators have been obtaining huge sensor data due to the installation of fuel-efficient and electronically controlled diesel engines on vessels. This requires them to appoint specialists to analyse the data or end up with heavy workload.

“The e-GICSX will be a preventative maintenance system that monitors engine abnormalities and equipment performance.”

According to ClassNK, the primary aim of this research project is to develop an automatic system that would analyse the sensor data. It will also try to prevent system failures and extend the frequency of overhaul intervals.

ClassNK, along with its subsidiary ClassNK Consulting Service, has developed CMAXS; an engine condition-based monitoring system used for data analysis.

Under the research partnership, the ClassNK CMAXS will be integrated into Mitsui’s engine support system e-GICS to develop e-GICSX.

The e-GICSX will be a preventative maintenance system that monitors engine abnormalities and equipment performance. This system can lead to a reduction in lifecycle costs as well as ensure safe operation of the ship.

The integration project will continue until March 2016.

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding introduced the online marine engine support system, e-GICS, in 2004 for diagnosis and maintenance of equipment. The number of registered vehicles on the system has grown to 3,000 this year.
