Ship and offshore classification society DNV GL has introduced a new research programme, Low Carbon Future, to accelerate efforts for a sustainable, low-carbon future.
The Low Carbon Future team comprises IPCC lead authors, including physical oceanographer Cecilie Mauritzen and philosopher and sociologist Asun St.Clair.

The team will explore the opportunities and barriers involved in transforming from a fossil-based world to a low-carbon, sustainable future.
Low Carbon Future programme director Mauritzen said: “Climate mitigation efforts are sadly insufficient on the public policy arena, and it seems more and more likely that real breakthroughs can and must come from the private sector.”
“Therefore we believe that the DNV GL research on this issue will have high visibility and potentially very high impact.”
Mauritzen added that the research would allow for a broader view of an important and urgent transformation for mankind.

By GlobalDataThe Low Carbon Future programme, which will focus on solution-orientated research, is said to support DNV GL’s vision of a ‘global impact for a safe and sustainable future’.
Over the last 18 months, DNV GL’s core team of researchers have worked with various organisations and thought leaders for specific answers on how the transformation is to be realised.
Commenting on the research programme, DNV GL chief sustainability officer Bjørn Haugland said: “This demonstrates DNV GL’s commitment to lead the way and tackle climate change head-on.”
The company said it allocates 5% of its revenue into research and development each year, with 1% allocated to strategic research.
