Wärtsilä has secured a contract to provide pumping solutions for a new floating storage unit (FSU), to support the operations of the Mariner oilfield in the North Sea.

Located on the East Shetland platform of the North Sea, around 150km east of the Shetland Isles, the Mariner field is the largest offshore development in UK waters, with an estimated production capacity of 55,000 barrels of oil per day for some 30 years.

The new FSU is being constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) on behalf of Statoil. It is expected to enter operation in 2017 with a capacity of 850,000 barrels.

“The fact that SHI…has chosen Wärtsilä speaks highly of our offering.”

The Finnish marine technology firm will supply a range of pumping solutions, including 45 deepwell process and cargo offloading pumps with electric motors and variable speed drive panels, three fire water pump skids and two ballast pumps.

Wärtsilä flow and gas solutions vice-president Timo Koponen said that Wärtsilä has extensive experience in this market area, particularly with its electrically driven deepwell pumps.

“As a result, we can offer complete pumping solutions that are competitive in terms of both CAPEX and OPEX, and which meet the demanding requirements of offshore operations,” Koponen said.
