Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has successfully upgraded the functionality of an existing data collection and monitoring system as part of a collaboration with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES).

The upgrade to the Fleet Monitor system was carried out as part of an initiative that intends to support the development of next-generation ship management support solutions, as well as data collection and monitoring systems.

Vessels will be able to clearly identify and receive abnormal values within onboard instruments using the newly modified system.

The refurbished system has been designed to offer improved displays of bunker oil and lubricant usage in order to facilitate more efficient consumption, and will provide information regarding the correlation between the ship’s operational status and consumption rates.

In addition, a display alert list has been included to easily determine the ship’s precise operating status and prevent various problems by showing a list of abnormal values within the vessel’s onboard instruments over the past 12 hours.

“The two companies are working to reduce environmental impact of vessel operation by preventing problems and reducing the consumption of oil.”

MOL and MES originally began developing the upgrades in June with the intention of creating new ship management support systems to offer greater operational efficiency and support commercialisation.

MOL said in a statement: “This initiative will allow enhanced operating support from shore-side systems and personnel.

“The two companies are working to reduce environmental impact of vessel operation by preventing problems and reducing the consumption of oil such as bunker fuel oil, which in turn cuts exhaust emissions.”

The Fleet Monitor system has already been installed on-board more than 60 MOL-operated vessels under the collaboration.

The Internet-based ship-to-shore integrated information infrastructure system was developed by MES and can manage ships’ operations, while simultaneously sharing vessels’ operational information with offices located on land.
