AIDA Cruises has received its new cruise ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) from shipbuilder Meyer Werft.

The new ship, AIDAnova, is the world’s first cruise ship that can run on low-emission LNG fuel in port and at sea.

AIDA Cruises is scheduled to receive two additional ships from the new AIDAnova series in 2021 and 2023.

AIDA Cruises president Felix Eichhorn said: “With huge enthusiasm and creativity, we have brought together an extraordinary product variety on AIDAnova.

“We are incredibly proud to be operating what is currently the world’s most eco-friendly cruise ship, and we will be consistently pursuing this path of continuous development.”

AIDAnova is 337,00m-long and 42m-wide. The vessel is equipped with 20 decks, 17 restaurants, around 3,500m² of wellness area, an outdoor gym, 17 bars, and other amenities.

The 183,900t ship has 2,626 passenger cabins, while it is designed to carry 5,228 passengers and around 1,500 crew members.

Classed by Registro Italiano Navale (DescriptionRINA), AIDAnova can travel at a maximum speed of 17k.

AIDAnova will operate under the Italian flag and expects to receive its first guests in Tenerife, Spain, on 19 December.

AIDAnova is equipped with the first television studio at sea, which will produce and broadcast live shows daily.

The vessel has the ‘Four Elements’ activity area featuring ropes course and water slides, as well as a Beach Club for relaxation.

In its premiere season expected to begin this month, AIDAnova will embark on a seven-day journey around the Canary Islands in Spain, and Madeira, Portugal.

From next year, the vessel will begin cruising in Mediterranean destinations, including Mallorca, Barcelona, Rome, Florence, and Marseilles.
