Wärtsilä has completed the delivery and installation of its vessel traffic service (VTS) solution in Portuguese ports of Lisbon and Setúbal / Sesimbra.
The technology group has completed providing necessary training for using the VTS solution, which is designed to increase operational efficiency at the ports.

Developed and supplied by a Wärtsilä group unit Transas, the solution is designed to reduce waiting times for vessels at the ports and will enable just-in-time pilotage.
Wärtsilä Ship Traffic Control and Management director Dmitry Rostopshin said: “This extensive project is another outstanding example of how Wärtsilä is utilising high levels of connectivity and digitalisation to develop the latest technology for creating even greater maritime safety and operational efficiencies as part of its Smart Marine Ecosystem vision.”
The overall project included the delivery of two VTS control centres, seven remote sites with sensors, and the integration of various radars.
It also included the deployment of Automatic Identification System (AIS) Base Stations, Radio Direction Finders (RDF), VHF and Navtex subsystems, day / night cameras, as well as weather and sea sensors.

By GlobalDataThe VTS system leverages the Pilot Portable Units – Pilot PRO application to transmit data between the control centres and pilots.
APL VTS and Pilot Department head Rui Barata and APSS port and maritime safety director Carlos Marques jointly said: “We are extremely satisfied with the VTS solution for these ports and thank Wärtsilä for its efficient handling of this important project.
“Lisbon and Setúbal are major ports on the Iberian peninsula and having this advanced technology will benefit our operations and the safety of navigation in many ways.”
Wärtsilä recently announced a new contract to provide maintenance services for Marine Service Company’s (MSCL) tug vessels.
