China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard has signed an agreement for a joint development project (JDP) with DNV GL for the construction of a new 270,000m³ LNG carrier.

Under the terms of the JDP, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard and DNV GL will combine expertise and experience in research and development, engineering, classification, and construction.

DNV GL noted that new vessels and greater efficiencies will be required to transport large amounts from diverse suppliers.

Hudong-Zhonghua and DNV GL will develop a modern ultra-large LNG carrier, which would be capable of transporting enough LNG to provide gas for 4.7 million homes in Shanghai for a month.

A single 250k vessel is expected to increase terminal capacity by 50% without terminal expansion.

“LNG is an energy source that is becoming more important as we look to improve air quality and lower carbon emissions.”

DNV GL Greater China regional manager Norbert Kray said: “LNG is an energy source that is becoming more important as we look to improve air quality and lower carbon emissions.
