Swedish marine solutions provider Alfa Laval has secured a Skr210m ($22m) contract to supply its PureBallast systems to an alliance of Turkish shipowners.

The contract was signed in Istanbul on 4 July, at a ceremony with the Turkish Shipowners Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) Group, an association of almost 50 shipowners.

The order will be booked in the third quarter. It will see Alfa Laval supply PureBallast systems over a five-year period from 2019 to 2024.

Compact systems will be installed on a range of small vessels.

Alfa Laval marine division president Sameer Kalra said: “I am very pleased to announce this agreement for our reliable PureBallast systems.

“We look forward to working with the Turkish Shipowners BWT Group and are proud to have the trust of such a prominent association of owners and operators.”

Alfa Laval PureBallast is claimed to be the first chemical-free solution for ballast water treatment that is certified by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

It is also claimed to be the first system to obtain the US Coast Guard type approval for usage in all water salinities, including freshwater.

PureBallast features a UV reactor, which was developed collectively by Alfa Laval and Wallenius Water based on Wallenius Water technology.

Alfa Laval’s products are used in power plants, on ships, oil and gas exploration, and by the mechanical engineering industry in around 100 countries.

In 2018, Alfa Laval reported annual sales of approximately Skr40.7bn (€4bn). It has nearly 17,200 employees.
