Finnish marine technology firm Wartsila has won a contract to deliver LNG fuel storage and supply system for two new trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs).

The LNG fuel storage will be deployed at two dredgers that are being constructed by Keppel Offshore & Marine for the Dutch marine contractor Van Oord.

The system includes a pair of 640m³ single-shell polyurethane-insulated storage tanks. The tanks are equipped with a new ‘inline tank connection space’ (ILTCS) that holds the process equipment.

Unlike the traditional on-top installation, the process equipment is placed in front of the tanks in this system.

This arrangement improves the vessel’s view lines for better navigational safety and on-deck applications.

It also decreases the damage risk to equipment that is generally installed on top of a single-shell tank.

Also, the ILTCS enhances fuel storage volume efficiency for below-deck installation as it does not require the process equipment to be on top of the tank, simplifying the installation of the LNG system.

Wartsila Marine electronics, entertainment and processing vice-president Antti Kuokkanen said: “Our experience in the marine industry’s LNG fuel gas market is unmatched, and this latest development of the famous Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage, supply and control system reflects this knowledge and experience.”

The technology firm will supply the equipment for the first vessel by the middle of 2020, while the second delivery is scheduled in late 2020.

Van Oord Ship Management Department director Jaap de Jong said: “We are very pleased to collaborate with Wartsila, a globally recognised leader in LNG fuel systems, for this project.

“Thanks to this unique technology, we’ll be gaining more experience using LNG as an alternative fuel in our dredging fleet.”

Last month, Wartsila received a contract to supply a hybrid propulsion system for a new offshore wind construction support vessel Acta Centaurus.

In July, the Finnish firm introduced a hybrid installation system for bulk carriers in the marine sector, which was first deployed on the M/V Paolo Topic vessel.
