Global asset and investment manager MPC Capital has acquired a 50% strategic stake in Germany-based Albis Shipping & Transport.

The acquisition of Albis will complement MPC Capital’s range of services in commercial ship management, in addition to its technical ship manager Ahrenkiel Tankers.

The stake will also enhance the company’s commercial expertise, following the recent merger between Contchart and Harper Petersen.

MPC Maritime Holding managing director Christian Rychly said: “In view of the new IMO 2020 regulations and the relatively high average age of the global tanker fleet, we expect a number of changes to the tanker industry going forward.

“This will include discussions on the alternative propulsion technologies, as well as appropriate ship designs for the changing trade flows.

“We are also seeing growing interest from institutional investors who want to develop these new concepts jointly with us.”

Apart from the tanker business, Albis is also active in a dry bulk segment through a joint venture (JV), as well as the sale and purchase of tonnage.

In September, MPC Capital and shipping company Zeaborn formed a JV for commercial ship management.

The two companies announced the merging of their activities in containership chartering and commercial management under the shipbroker brand Harper Petersen.

Zeaborn will contribute its activities of Harper Petersen to the JV, while MPC Capital will offer its Contchart business.

Led by Kim Moeller, Albis operates a commercial platform for various size tankers and offers tailor-made solutions to its customers for the tanker chartering and operations.
