Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has selected Nokia for the delivery of a 4G/LTE Field Area Network (FAN) solution for its new LNG-fuelled car carrier called Century Highway Green.
Nokia will provide a FAN environment to K Line that aims to facilitate fast, secure, encrypted wireless communication between the shore and vessel.

This will aid in the application of new digital services such as CCTV and fast transmission of data for distant monitoring of onload/offload work and remote visual checking of equipment when the ship is in Japan or overseas.
K Line AI digitalisation strategy group head Hiroshi Uchida said: “Working with Nokia, we plan to accelerate the development and utilisation of advanced digital technologies that enable safer, world-class shipping services. With the Nokia 4G/LTE network, we will be able to communicate more effectively during berthing, using the same sophisticated technology as available on land. This creates the capability to deliver improved operational performance, skills transfer and safety management.”
Nokia Enterprise Japan customer team head Donny Janssens said: “Through the deployment of the field area network, we’re helping K Line not only to enhance operational efficiency and industrial safety but also to advance its digital transformation. This is the first Nokia 4G/LTE FAN deployment in Japan, bringing it to a new market following its successful deployment in mining sites, electric grids and ports worldwide.”
The solution includes the Nokia 7705 SAR-8 for onshore use and the Nokia 7705 SAR-Hm LTE router for on-board installation.

By GlobalDataThis router pairing will enable the transfer of data and video from the vessel’s onboard CCTV and IT systems to the port via LTE connections.
Nokia stated that its FAN solution will allow K Line to check loading and unloading in real-time, as well as reduce the time required for bulky file exchange during port calls.
Nokia’s Network Group Encryption (NGE) will be responsible for the protection of the data.
Without any degradation of LTE link performance, NGE provides a high level of security and quality of service while protecting MPLS services with minimal cost.
The system integration will be supplied by KCCS Mobile Engineering and the domestic communication lines will be provided by KDDI Corporation.
