The first of the two tankers will be delivered in the second half of next year.

Built with electric-hybrid notation, the tankers will feature energy storage systems (ESS) technology, including lithium-ion batteries for energy storage.

They will also be equipped with an automated power management system (PMS), which will help manage power usage and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The ESS will be able to charge its battery system from onshore power supply sources with the availability of such charging centres in Singapore in the future.

These bunker tankers are expected to minimise CO₂ emissions for V-Bunkers within the port.

Vitol Asia head Mike Muller said: “We are proud and delighted to be the first to contribute to the reduction of emissions in the port of Singapore through the deployment of these electric-hybrid bunker tankers.

“We support Singapore’s aspirations to be a leader in maritime decarbonisation and we look forward to using these new crafts to even more efficiently deliver bunkers to customers here in the world’s biggest bunkering port.”

In June, Vitol Bunkers teamed up with Zhejiang Seaport International Trading (SeaportBunker), a subsidiary of Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group, to provide bunker fuels at Yangshan Port, a container ship port in China.

This collaboration expanded ongoing bunker operations in Zhoushan and Ningbo.

In addition, the project covered the deployment of two dedicated bunker barges to provide ‘seamless logistics and fuel deliveries’ to clients visiting the port.
