Hawaii-based Pasha Hawaii has taken delivery of its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel, dubbed MV George III, from Keppel AmFELS, a company based in Texas, US.

It is claimed that MV George III will be the first LNG-driven vessel to serve in Hawaii as well as the first to fuel on the country’s West Coast.

It is also the first of two new Ohana Class box ships that will be added to the company’s fleet. The 774ft LNG-powered carrier will operate on the Hawaii-to-Mainland trade route.

The ship is equipped with a modern engine and optimised hull form in addition to an underwater propulsion system with a ‘high-efficiency’ rudder and propeller. All these features are said to generate energy savings for the vessel.

MV George III will be fully run on natural gas from day one. As a new Jones Act carrier, it exceeds the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) 2030 emission standards for ocean vessels.

Keppel AmFELS president David Wedgeworth said: “We are pleased to deliver Pasha Hawaii’s first LNG-powered containership.
