TotalEnergies Marine Fuels, a business unit of TotalEnergies, has concluded its first bunkering of sustainable marine biofuel on a containership of Cosco Shipping Lines.

Using ship-to-ship transfer, the 4,250 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) Cosco Houston container vessel was refuelled with TotalEnergies-supplied very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) in Singapore waters.

The VLSFO, which was integrated with 20% second-generation and waste-based used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME), was bunkered at Penjuru with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and tank storage company Vopak Terminals Singapore.

The biofuel has been used during the ship’s journey to the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, TotalEnergies stated.

Earlier this year, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels also conducted successful biofuel bunkering tests in Singapore with a vehicle carrier run by Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and an NYK Line-chartered bulker.

In comparison with conventional fuel oil, the sustainable biofuel is expected to cut down greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by about 17%.

TotalEnergies Marine Fuels Asia Pacific trading and operations general manager Laura Ong said: “We are honoured to partner COSCO Shipping Lines, one of the world’s largest container shipping companies, in their decarbonisation journey with the provision of their first biofuel bunker stem.

“This successful collaboration lays a foundation for both companies to explore new joint initiatives that promote the introduction of clean, low-carbon alternative fuels.”

In January, TotalEnergies collaborated with CMA CGM to launch the inaugural ship-to-containership liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation in Southern France’s Port of Marseille Fos.
