South Korea-based Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has awarded two contracts to Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) for the tank design of seven new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier vessels.

The contracts have been granted on behalf of a European shipowner as well as an American shipowner.

Each LNG vessel will have a capacity of 174,000m³.

The vessels are anticipated to be delivered between the first quarter of 2026 and fourth quarter of 2027.

All the tanks will be installed with the Mark III Flex membrane containment system designed by GTT.

The Mark III technology is a cryogenic liner developed for the containment of liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping as well as onshore and offshore storage at atmospheric pressure.

Supported by the ship’s hull structure, the Mark III containment and insulation system features a primary corrugated stainless steel membrane that is placed on top of prefabricated insulation panels.

The system also features a complete secondary membrane produced using composite material.

Designed for mass production techniques and easy assembly, the modular system includes standard prefabricated components that can accommodate any shape and capacity of tanks.

GTT launched the Mark III design in 2008 to enhance the thermal and structural efficiency of the technology.

In October, GTT won a contract from another South Korean firm, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), for the tank design of six new LNG carriers.
