AP Moller – Maersk has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with US-based SunGas Renewables for green methanol, as part of its efforts to decarbonise the supply chains of customers.
Under the deal, green methanol will be produced at several facilities that will be developed by SunGas in the US.

Maersk will offtake full volumes of green methanol from these facilities.
With an annual production capacity of around 390,000t, the first facility is anticipated to commence operations in 2026.
SunGas facilities will use its 1,000 platform to turn sustainably sourced residues from the forestry and wood products industries into green methanol.
This is the ninth such partnership of Maersk to boost the global production capacity of green methanol.

By GlobalDataSunGas, along with eight other strategic partners, will deliver the green fuel for the 19 methanol-powered container vessels that Maersk ordered.
The other partners include Carbon Sink, CIMC ENRIC, Debo, European Energy, Green Technology Bank, Orsted, Proman, and Wastefuel.
Maersk green sourcing and portfolio management head Emma Mazhari said: “Securing green marine fuels at a global scale within this decade will require rapid scale-up of green methanol production capacity using a variety of technology and feedstock pathways.
“We are very pleased to welcome SunGas Renewables as a strategic partner in our efforts to achieve our goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2040 across our entire business and to ensure meaningful progress is made within this decade in line with the Paris Agreement.”
Last month, Maersk established a strategic collaboration with US-based project developer Carbon Sink to accelerate the production of green marine fuels.
