Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet has secured a deal from the government-owned Swedish Transport Administration Trafikverket to perform the refit and repair works on a Ro-Ro ferry.

The Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet yard is located on Sweden’s Baltic Sea coast and is a part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC).

The newly awarded contract was granted after a public tender process, and covers repair works on Trafikverket’s 77m-long Castella vessel.

Work under the deal is expected to be completed between November and March 2018.

Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet managing director Flip Waal said: “The Castella is due to arrive here on 7 November and leave for resumption of active service in March next year.

“We will complete all works for the new wheelhouse here on site; this includes fabrication, finishing and installation.

“By performing all these actions under one roof, we can guarantee the highest levels of quality at a competitive price.”

The yard is also set to design, construct and install a new integrated automation and alarm system (IAS) on Castella as part of the new arrangement.

"The Castella is due to arrive here on 7 November and leave for resumption of active service in March next year."

The vessel’s four propulsion engines will be renewed and a new control system for the rudder propellers will also be installed. Trafikverket have agreed to provide the new control system for Castella.

In addition, plans have been outlined for the overhaul and painting of the vessel's ramps, as well as painting of the decks and internal hull.

Damen Shipyards Group won a contract from Canadian ferry operator BC Ferries to build two new ferries earlier this month.

The new 81m-long vessels form part of BC Ferries’ ongoing fleet renewal programme.
