Swiss ship engine manufacturer Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has secured a deal to provide its low-speed dual-fuel engines with X-DF low-pressure gas admission to power Russia-based SCF Group’s four LNG-fuelled Aframax tankers.

WinGD will supply its seven-cylinder, 62cm-bore type 7X62DF engines under the new contract.

The 7X62DF engines are rated 13,800kw at 86rpm and have been designed to operate on a range of fuels, including LNG and heavy fuel oil (HFO), as well as distillate or hybrid liquid fuels.

The engines also comply with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Tier III limits for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in their gas fuel mode, and with IMO Tier II when burning liquid fuel.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) will build the four ice class 1A, 114,000dwt tankers at its shipyard in Samho, South Korea, while the WinGD engines will be built by HHI’s Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) in Ulsan.

The vessels are expected to be deployed mainly in the Baltic and North Seas once operational, and will also be able to operate in the Emission Control Areas (ECAs), where IMO Tier III limitations on NOX and Sulphur oxides (SOX) emission are strictly enforced.
