The solution is based on the latest advances in sensor and computer vision technology to provide various real-time visualisations of a vessel’s surroundings, as well as new ways of perceiving its situation.

It also provides a virtual model of the ship in real surroundings to allow a third person to view the vessel’s operations.

In addition, Ability Marine Pilot Vision allows officers on-board a ship to switch between views instantaneously, while easily predicting vessel motions and remaining alert to the presence of hidden obstacles or collision risks.

ABB Marine and Ports Digital Solutions senior vice-president Mikko Lepisto said: “Computer vision has advanced significantly in recent years. With this new solution, ABB is leveraging that, in order to present the ship and its environment in ways beyond ordinary perception.

“Crucially, we can do this in real-time in an intuitive fashion, which does not distract the crew from their work.

“In this sense, Ability Marine Pilot Vision extends the capabilities of the human senses.”

ABB further noted that Ability Marine Pilot Vision can easily be installed on conventional vessels to enable new shore-side remote services, as well as provide additional design options for new vessels.

The solution represents an important step in the ongoing digitalisation of the shipping industry and is expected to support future vessels, which are expected to be electric, digital and connected.
