Alfa Laval Korea and Hanwha Ocean Ecotech have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together on the development of ammonia fuel system solutions for dual-fuel vessels.
Representatives from both companies signed the MoU during the Kormarine 2025 event in Busan, South Korea.

The agreement aims to advance technologies that support the maritime industry’s move towards alternative and lower-carbon fuels.
Under this arrangement, Alfa Laval will provide technical expertise in ammonia fuel supply systems and mitigation technologies, including its ammonia release mitigation system (ARMS).
Hanwha Ocean Ecotech will contribute its experience in marine system engineering and integration.
The partnership involves joint business development activities, project collaboration, and plans to deliver a pilot installation that will support further cooperative efforts between the two companies.

This collaboration is intended to secure early opportunities in the field of alternative marine fuels and establish a competitive position as the market for these technologies grows.
The agreement also aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and improve productivity and safety for dual-fuel vessel operations.

“By combining our strengths, we aim to accelerate the decarbonisation of global shipping with safe and reliable ammonia fuel solutions.”
Alfa Laval is engaged in various other initiatives centred on ammonia as a marine fuel.
These include an ongoing research partnership with WinGD, which has resulted in successful testing of Alfa Laval’s FCM Ammonia system, ARMS, and Fuel Valve Trains.
Additionally, Alfa Laval has been involved in a project with K Shipbuilding (KSB), WinGD, and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
In this project, Alfa Laval contributed to designing the fuel system, which incorporates an ammonia fuel supply system, fuel valve train, ARMS, and an Aalborg ammonia dual-fuel boiler system.
In May this year, Damen Shiprepair and Alfa Laval Benelux signed a MoU to strengthen their collaboration on energy efficiency in the maritime sector, aiming to help shipowners transition to lower-carbon operations.
